What do you think Jesus was all about and what is Christianity?

July 25, 2017 :: Jim Piper

This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. Mark 1:1, NLT

My publisher recommended I change the name of my book from The 4 Essentials of Christianity to The 4 Essentials of Christian Living, which I did.

Christianity can be confusing for many. Is it an institution? Is it a movement? Is it a philosophy? Is it a religion? I guess you could answer "yes" to any or all those questions. However, if you read the text paying attention to what it says while blocking out all those sound bytes of our past and present, it might help us answer what Christianity really is, at least according to Scripture.

The first verse in this Gospel reads, "This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God."

The Gospel means Good News. But this kind of Good News is something divine, extraordinary. And notice this extraordinary thing is not primarily a philosophy, institution, or religion... it's a person. So, the Gospel is about Jesus Christ.

Let me restate. The Gospel is not primarily about introducing the founder of a new faith. It's not primarily about a new way of living. It has something to do with Jesus Christ. The implication is that a message is being delivered from a place we have never been (heaven) about this unusual person. Let's keep reading and see what the story has to tell.
